Our Pre-Primary classroom was created to accommodate the needs of a busy toddler. The warm, homelike environment supports their natural curiosity, allowing them the freedom to explore the class the classroom and to choice their own work. Giving the children this freedom fosters their desire for independence while teaching them how to make good choices. The directresses are calm, gentle, soft-spoken, and patient. They demonstrate respect and compassion by kneeling to the eye level of the child when speaking rather than talking down to them. Mistakes are treated as an opportunity to teach and learn rather than misbehavior. This results in a clam, soothing atmosphere where the children feel safe and secure. Our main goal for this age group is to prepare them for the learning that will occur in the primary classroom. They will focus on the following:

-Learning the ground rules-These are the basic rules we use throughout the school such as using

your walking feet, using your inside voice, and keeping your work on your rug. These ground

rules are enforced through repetition and gentle reminders.

-Independent toileting-All diapering is done standing up in the bathroom so that your child will get

used to the idea of sitting on the potty. When they are ready to move from diapers to pull-ups

or underwear, they will be taken to the bathroom on a set schedule and given frequent

reminders. We encourage parents to dress their children in clothing that can be easily pulled

up and down on their own. Clothing with buckles, snaps, and buttons can be difficult for a

young child to manage, and we want to make it as easy as possible.

-Developing the work cycle-The children will learn to choose a lesson, complete the lesson, return

the lesson to the proper place on the shelf, and then choose another lesson.

-Positive conflict resolution-The classroom is designed to create a calm peaceful environment. We

help the children to identify and validate their feelings. They are taught that it is okay to be

sad or angry, but it is not okay to scream or hit.Children are encourage to calmly use their words

when they are upset. The adults model this behavior by using positive discipline techniques

that do not include yelling, punishing, or shaming.

-Practical Life-The routines of everyday living are the foundation of the Pre-Primary program, and

the practical life lessons are a key component. The lessons in this area will help to develop

concentration, coordination, order, independence, and attention to detail. They will also receive

lessons on grace and courtesy including how to take turns, how to wait in a line, and pushing

in your chair at the table.

Your child will work with a variety of puzzles, books, and lessons including many of the original sensorial materials designed by Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, including the pink tower, the knobbed and knobbles cylinders, and the brown prisms. The sensorial lessons will help to refine their visual, auditory, and tactile discrimination. In mathematics they will learn one-to-one correspondence and association of quantity and symbols through concrete activities. They will be introduced to pre-language skills including matching, sorting, sequencing, and rhyming. Their first introduction to letter sounds will be with sandpaper letters.
